Big Sur

Big Sur is located along scenic Highway One that meanders along California’s coastline.  This beautiful coastline is in between Carmel to the north and San Simeon to the south.

Archaeological evidence suggests that Native Americans lived in Big Sur for thousands of years, leading a nomadic, hunter-gatherer existence.  The first European to arrive at Big Sur was the Spanish Juan Cabrillo in 1542, who sailed up the coast but did not anchor.

The Spanish gave Big Sur its name, calling the region El Sur Grande (the Big Country of the South) because it was a vast and unexplored land south of their capital at Monterey.

    1. Your observation is correct. This is why the early mariners primarily from Spain could not land.
