Big Sur is located along scenic Highway One that meanders along California’s
coastline. This beautiful coastline is in
between Carmel to the north and San Simeon to the south.

| Archaeological evidence suggests that Native Americans lived in Big Sur for thousands of years, leading a nomadic, hunter-gatherer existence. The first European to arrive at Big Sur was the Spanish Juan Cabrillo in 1542, who sailed up the coast but did not anchor. |

The Spanish gave Big Sur its name, calling the region El Sur Grande (the Big
Country of the South) because it was a vast and unexplored land south of their
capital at Monterey.
