State Capitol in Tallahassee, Florida. Florida was discovered by Juan Ponce de Leon on Easter Sunday (March 27,1513).
He named it La Florida in recognition of
the verdant landscape and because it was Easter season, which the
Spaniards called Pascua Florida (Festival of Flowers).
The precise location of their landing has been
disputed by historians but most likely it occurred at St. Augustine or a small harbor to the south that bears his name.
