Kos is the largest town of the island with the same name that belongs in the Dodecanese group of islands in southeast Aegean Archipelago. |
The name Kos (Greek: Κῶς)
is first found in Iliad in which Homer writes that a contingent from Kos fought
for the Greeks in the Trojan War. The Dorians
invaded it in the 11th century BC, establishing a colony with settlers from
Epidaurus whose Asclepius cult made
their new home famous for its sanatoria. Asclepeion is the historic site where the God of
Medicine practiced his healing art.
